History
Barbershop singing was created by ear harmonizers, or "woodshedders," who sang without benefit of printed arrangements. It is largely the old songs because the kinds of melodies that are best adapted to the style are those written in the heyday of Tin Pan Alley, from 1890 to 1920.
Founding
The Charleston Barbershop Chorus first met June 28, 1967 at the First Federal Savings & Loan Association building at 34 Broad Street in Charleston, SC. The first performance for the group was held September 30, 1967 at 8 PM at the Garden Theatre.

Director
David Box joined our chorus in 2007. From the Cleveland Ohio area, his 15 years of experience as a barbershopper have included being the Associate Director of the Cascade Chordsmen of Elyria, Ohio for ten years while simultaneously singing for four of those years in The Alliance Chorus of Columbus, OH, a perennial top ten international finisher. In addition, he is a well-recognized vocal training coach for choruses and quartets. Box has held most of the chapter leadership positions and was a membership of the Johnny Appleseed District House of Delegates to round out his understanding of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
